The first movie seems to have gotten IMHO an unnecessqry amount of grief - I really liked it.
Hellboy reminds me of a supernatural Wolverine - rough, blunt as a brick, tough as nails, but
deep down inside he cares for the world and the people in it but if you act like a dumb #ss or
mess with him the wrong way he'll punch your teeth into the back of your mouth.
Anyways, here are some links with some reviews. The first review/link is particularly insightful.
Apparently this movie is deeper in character portrayals than the first one and there are apparently
there ar a good amount of moral dilemnas in it. I've always been fond of the misunderstood hero,
the ones cast aside by the very people they fight, bleed, and sometimes die for - humanity. To me
the greatest heroes are the ones who overcome the most, whether it is a foe on the outside our their
own personal demons. Tony Stark/Iron Man may have fought alot of villians but I think his greatest
foe was his bout with alcoholism. The Hulk/Bruce Banner is a hero because he refuses to give in to
the vastly destructive force of the Hulk, even imparting in the savage monster a sense of humanity
and caring. Wolverine was created for war and driven by beserker animal instincts but beneath the
savage animal there is his humanity that shines out when times are darkest. Sadly, the old saying
of "we ostracize or destroy the thigns that we do not understand" often holds true so I am glad to
have movies like this where the misunderstood hero gets his/her chance to shine.
I'm looking forward to Hellboy 2 as well as the Journey To The Center of The Earth movie this
weekend but especially Hellboy 2.
