Mission: JDRF Walk- Indianapolis

Postby Shockwave on Sat Aug 23, 2008 9:47 pm

Hey Everyone!

Shockwave is joining the Juvenal Diabetes Research Foundation for this years walk. I need the help of as many superheroes as we can muster. This year, the Indianapolis chapter is having a superhero themed walk, and they’ve asked me to walk in costume! Once they heard about the Skiffytown League of Heroes (and every other superhero we know) they wanted as many costumed crusaders as we could gather up.

So, can anyone else make it to Indianapolis for October 18th? If so, please let me know within the next week. If anyone can make it, that would be great, and I’ll form a team for the superheroes to join. (BTW, I do have a fold out couch, and a spare bedroom [no bed though] for anyone who might want to crash here too.)

However, if you can’t make it, I’ll do a solo walk, and hopefully you can help out by making a donation for the walk. That would be great.

So, here’s the info:

City: Indianapolis, IN
Venue: Military Park - Indianapolis
Date of Walk: 10/18/2008
Registration Start Time: 9:00 AM
Walk Start Time: 10:30 AM
Length of Walk: 2-mile Fun Walk/5k Walk or Run
Contact Person: Stacey Kubal
Local Chapter: Indiana State Chapter
Local Chapter Phone: (317)469-9604

What is diabetes?
http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=101982

Diabetes (medically known as diabetes mellitus) is the name given to disorders in which the body has trouble regulating its blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a disorder of the body's immune system -- that is, its system for protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any "foreign" substances. A third form of diabetes, called monogenic diabetes, is sometimes mistaken for type 1 diabetes.

Have fun!

Cuz: if I could be anywhere near the area you know I'd be all over that. But just for clarification; they asked you to walk in Indian Summer heat in your PVC special? (whistles) Remember to hydrate.

Pencil me in shock.

I gotta see what the dates are for two walks I'm doing through work though. One is for Diabites and the other one one is for the Alzheimers Association. I think they're both in October though.

I am so glad to see our 2008 Walk to Cure Diabetes is already posted in your forum. I know it was already mentioned but the theme for our Walk this year is "Be a HERO." It would be great if any of you could participate that day, not only to walk but to interact with the crowd and possibly participate in the Opening Ceremonies.

As mentioned, registration begins at 9 am Saturday, October 18 at Military Park. There should be 3500-4000 people attending who will be in the park between 9-10:30 am when the Walk begins and 12-2 pm when walkers return. This is a family friendly event with a goal this year to raise at least $964,000 to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Please let me know if you need any other information about the Walk or about JDRF.

Thanks a lot!

I wish I could walk with you, Blondie, I really do.

I'm afraid a $10 donation really is the best I can do right now.

Welcome to Skiffytown Jillian.

Allow me to tell you the story of JDRF and how it played a big part in the actual forming of what we are becoming.

There's this annoying creature around these parts we refer to as "Prime Penguin". He's the sidekick of a young hero by the name of "HyperCharge". Hypercharge is not your average "supehero". She actually has juvenile diabetis. When they were auditioning for season 2 of Who Wants To Be A Superhero, she wanted to audition but didn't meet the age requirement so she sent her lowly sidekick in her steed. Their mission, to have a little fun and bring awareness to such a worthy cause. it inspired many of us and we took that as a sign that we could continue to utilize the concepts we had created and continue on that path.

Charger and Penguin are still abouts. Chargers public appearance schedule stays booked so she rarely has time to visit with us but we kept Penguin on and actually allowed him onto the board of directors for Skiffytown League of Heroes and we gave him the job of webmaster so he's our Forum admin . And I have to be nice to him or he'll change my forum title.

:)

I know they're both very active with JDRF and last year their team had t-shirts bearing her superhero with artwork given to Hypercharge by another member of this board. So I'm sure they'll be doing it again this year in the area they normally "Patrol".

:)
