Superheroes Day To Honor Cancer Patient

Postby Melee Stormbringer on Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:25 am

BEL AIR, Md. - WBALTV.com

Saturday is Superheroes Day in Bel Air to honor a boy who is battling brain cancer.

Two-dozen comic book characters will line the streets of Bel Air for the event, along with The Dominator, a new superhero created to raise awareness of pediatric cancer.

The Dominator is a symbol of courage and determination. He's the alter ego of a boy in a comic book that was created for Dominic Osorio, a Harford County 6-year-old who has been battling Stage 4 brain cancer for two years.

"It's not just a red suit. It stands for an amazing young man whose heart and courage put this out there to help other kids," said Buontempo Brothers Italian Eatery shop manager Dave Anderson.

Anderson had the comic book made along with a special super suit after hearing Dominic, who's a regular customer, refer to himself as The Dominator, a superhero out to defeat the growth in his head.

"To believe that there's someone out there fighting for him … to cure this horrible disease," Anderson said.

Anderson said Dominic believes he's a superhero, and that on Christmas, Batman came to his house.

"I got down on my knees and said, 'I know you're a superhero.' And he started dancing around," a man dressed as Batman told 11 News.

Characters from SpongeBob will also be in attendance.

"If it rains, the superheroes will go inside," Anderson said.

"All these kids, you see their faces light up, and they think, 'Hey, maybe I could be a superhero,'" Batman said.

The 6-year-old, who will turn 7 this weekend, is currently in the hospital. Anderson said his story holds a message for everyone.

"He is a superhero, and we get our courage from him," Anderson said.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, a car wash at Chili's Restaurant will be held to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Superheroes Day starts at 3 p.m. on Main Street.

I found this slideshow of the day from the local news on-line. All I've been able to find so far.

and this article, which tells a bit more of the history behind the her9o character and the boy who inspired it.
