Representatives of The Skiffytown League of Heroes, at the request of Beyond Comics, gathered in Gaithersburg Maryland to march in the 70th annual Labor Day parade. Running since 1938, this parade has missed only one Labor Day (during World War II) and has never been rained out.
9:00 am - Bunnyman and I arrived at the designated meeting place. Seeing no one, we were afraid we had come to the wrong place.
9:30 am - arrival of Devix and Incognitoman. oh good we are in the right place.
10:30 - arrival of Justice Boy, Zoominoid and Danger Dude, followed soon after by DC Gaurdian.
11:00 am - following the arrival of the comic shop owner (who was our sponsor for the parade) we entered the Lakeforest Mall in full regalia for a walkaround of Beyond Comics. There we met up with the rest of our team - Batman, Robin, Snake Eyes, Torch and Ripper. There were several photo ops in the mall, some for us and many for curious bystanders. We lost Danger Dude at one point, but a search mission led by DC and JB retrieved him unharmed.
12:00 noon - we departed for the parade staging grounds. once there we assembled our float and got instructions for the parade. We were handing out 2000 free comic books to children along the parade route. We met a lot of interesting people, including many political organizations, the local boy scout troop, the local boys and girls club, and a giant bee. We're still working out the giant bee. He was cute, though...
DC and JB were interviewed by a reporter with NPR (National Public Radio), and had many photo ops with the children waiting to march.
after assembling the float and mingling with the spectators and other participants we prepared to take our place.
1:00 pm - We boarded the float and headed down the route. The crowds were sparse at first, but upon reaching the town center we were over whelmed by the crowds. We fanned out around the float and began passing out comics, posing for pics, and generally greeting the crowd. The people were wonderful! They were cheering and rushing out to greet us as we came through.
3:30 pm - At the end of the route, tired and not a little sunburnt, we disassembled the float and went our seperate ways.
The day was enormously successful in my estimation. We greeted so many people that day I'm not sure what the attendance numbers were for the parade, but it had to be huge. It was a beautiful day, and Skiffy represented proudly.
