The "Santa Question": Are we real?

Postby Chromatic on Thu Jun 18, 2009 3:57 am

I meant to ask this before MegaCon. Luckily, the issue didn't come up, at least not for me. I'm also asking it on both boards, just to make sure everyone can weigh in.

How do we handle the inevitable kid who asks "Do you really have powers?" What about adults? Is it better to stay in character or to be fully honest? Does the League have an official policy?

Thanks.

Chromatic: That is a very good question!!! I would like to know how to answer that question as it comes up.

I and Dr. Redux already posted on the other board.
Doc said to be honest, because superpowers aren't what makes a hero, and I agree with him.

I added that if someone asks, "if we're not really superheroes, then why the costumes?" then i would respond with "we're just wearing our inner selves on the outside!" And encourage others of all ages to find their inner hero as well! :)
Sound good?

I also replied on the other board with the jist of my answer being:

You should be truthful... but remember that Honesty and Truth arent always the same thing.

and the I posted this as my example:

DEAR EDITOR:
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.

Response:

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

I use the "Agent Mixsae can" approach and then give them the story that I created her using my imagination. She's alot like me but there's some things you can do using your imagination that you may not be able to.

Gives them the challange to see what they can come up with for their own creation.

I never divulge the full extent of my capabilities, because even i
don't truly know what i am fully capable of...
I just do what the big guy upstairs asks me to do and
if He gives me a little help along the way, all the better!

I'm porting this over from the other board:

PrimePenguin wrote:This sounds like a chance to recite the league mission statement...

Skiffytown League of Superheroes Mission Statement:

No reaction to a yellow sun... no radioactive spider bite.. just the super-human abilities of a charitable heart, and the will to do good.

To inspire others through example and assist those in need.

To shine the signal light skyward and summon the superhero that resides in everyone.

I think Prime won. :)

Seriously, thanks, everyone. I was kinda hoping that was the way it would trend.

Hey yall: My nieces and nephews saw a photo of me in me Eris uniform and asked me if I was really a superhero?
I told them honestly that while I cant do any of the things the cartoon superheroes do- A true superhero is someone who does the right thing even when it doesn't seem like the easiest way or the most popular. It is the strength to follow your heart even if nobodyelse agrees with you or tells you "It just isn't done that way" or "you can't do that". I f you think it is the right thing to do then follow your heart - if you succeed then thats great but if you should fail at least you tried while others stood around and did nothing!!!
